The Douro River is the second longest river in Portugal. It is navigable along its whole length due to its five dams that are a tourist attraction in themselves. The Carrapatelo Dam has a depth of 35 metres, one of the largest in Europe.
It was the Douro that brought prosperity to the region as it was along it that Port wine was transported. In past centuries this river represented a challenge and danger to those who travelled on it. At that time a small wooden boat called the Rabelo could navigate this water and transported the wine from the Vale do Douro to the river mouth where on its banks the cities of Porto and Vila nova de Gaia were founded.
